Senate Faults Makinde’s UN Probe Call Over Oyo School Abduction
The Senate has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for United Nations involvement in the Oyo school abduction case, saying the rescue of the pupils and teachers should not be turned into a political dispute.
Lawmakers took the position during plenary on Tuesday after the Oyo governor asked for outside scrutiny of the abduction in Oriire Local Government Area. The pupils and teachers had spent 56 days in captivity before their release.
NaijaTrend earlier reported the Presidency’s response to Makinde’s call here.
Vanguard and Daily Post reported that the Senate faulted the request for a UN-led probe and urged the governor not to undermine the efforts of Nigerian security agencies. Premium Times and Channels TV also reported that the chamber commended President Bola Tinubu, service chiefs and security agencies over the rescue.
The Senate’s reaction adds another layer to the debate over the abduction. Makinde has demanded a clear account of how the attack happened and how the victims were eventually freed, while federal officials and lawmakers have pushed back against his call for international scrutiny.
The chamber also urged the Federal Government to ensure that families of security personnel who died during rescue efforts receive statutory death benefits, insurance claims and pensions without delay.
