Sanwo-Olu Declares Emergency On Lagos Waste Management

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a limited emergency on waste management after weeks of pressure on refuse collection across the state.

Sanwo-Olu spoke on Wednesday during an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab.

The governor said the state needed urgent steps to clear refuse, improve coordination and restore effective collection. He said the government had already introduced monthly environmental sanitation but needed stronger follow-through.

Vanguard reported that Lagos is working on two 2,400-metric-tonne transfer loading stations at Olusosun and Solu 3 in Alimosho. The stations are expected to receive about 500 trucks per day before waste is moved to material recovery facilities planned for Oke-Osho in Epe and Erikitte in Badagry.

A Punch report on the cleanup effort said Sanwo-Olu had ordered immediate evacuation of waste across Lagos, with state officials moving to clear black spots and improve collection routes.
