Presidency Faults Makinde’s UN Probe Call Over Oyo School Abduction

The Presidency has pushed back against Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for United Nations scrutiny of the Oyo school abduction, saying Nigeria’s security agencies should be allowed to account for the rescue operation and the wider investigation.

Makinde had asked for international scrutiny after formally taking responsibility for the welfare, rehabilitation and education of the rescued pupils and teachers. Premium Times reported that Makinde demanded a full account of the abduction, including who was responsible, what failures allowed the attack and what measures would prevent another school kidnapping. The abduction involved pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

Punch reported that Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, criticised the call for a UN-backed investigation. He said the demand was unnecessary and argued that Nigeria’s military and security institutions were already handling the matter.

The exchange adds a political layer to the aftermath of the Oyo school abduction, which has already produced separate questions about school security, rescue operations and support for the survivors.
