INEC Plans IDP Voting Centres In Nine Plateau LGAs

INEC says it is preparing voting centres for internally displaced persons in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Plateau Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Samuel Egwu announced the plan on Wednesday during a meeting with political party leaders and stakeholders at the commission’s headquarters in Jos.

Egwu listed the affected areas as Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, Kanam, Kanke, Wase and Bokkos. He said the arrangement would apply where displaced voters are unable to return to their communities because of insecurity.

The REC said votes cast by displaced persons would still be counted under their original wards and constituencies. He linked the plan to Nigeria’s obligations under the Kampala Declaration on internally displaced persons.

Vanguard also reported that 121,821 new voters had been registered in Plateau State, including 65,928 women. Egwu urged parties to help identify and track displaced supporters so the commission can document them properly.
