Akpabio Petitions DSS Over Alleged Anti-North Statement

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has asked the Department of State Services to investigate a statement allegedly attributed to him on social media about Northern voters and the 2027 election.

The petition was filed on his behalf by his Chief of Staff, Chinedu Akubueze, after a graphic circulated on Facebook and other digital platforms using Akpabio’s photograph and title. The graphic claimed he said Northerners would suffer most if President Bola Tinubu lost the election.

Akpabio denied making the statement. The petition said no date, venue, speech, interview, audio, video, official statement or credible report had been produced to support the claim.

His media aide, Jackson Udom, made the complaint available to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday. The petition described the graphic as false, inflammatory and divisive, and asked the DSS to identify those who created and spread it.

The Senate President’s office said the material had no identifiable publisher or verifiable source, and alleged that it was designed to provoke regional resentment and portray him as threatening people in Northern Nigeria.
