Tinubu Asks UN Members To Add Charter Preamble To Constitutions

President Bola Tinubu has asked United Nations member states to include the Preamble to the UN Charter in their national constitutions, saying it would strengthen the values behind global peace, justice and human dignity.

Vanguard and Daily Post reported that Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Jimoh Ibrahim, made the proposal known during an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York.

Ibrahim said Tinubu believes the move would remind governments of their shared duty to humanity and support the principles on which the United Nations was founded. He said the proposal would help deepen member states’ commitment to peace, fundamental rights, international law and social progress.

The envoy, who chairs the Budget and Appropriation Committee of the UN General Assembly, also welcomed the commitment of the five permanent members of the Security Council to the purposes of the UN Charter.

According to both reports, the proposal received applause from delegates at the informal General Assembly meeting. Ibrahim said the reaction showed support for steps aimed at promoting solidarity and keeping the values of the UN Charter at the centre of national governance.

Tinubu is expected to take part in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in September 2026. The latest proposal places Nigeria’s foreign policy message around constitutional values, international cooperation and the UN’s founding principles.

The reports did not say that the proposal has become a binding UN process. They framed it as Nigeria’s position, delivered through its permanent representative, and as a diplomatic appeal to other member states before the next General Assembly session.
