Tinubu Sends State Police Amendment Bill To Reps

President Bola Tinubu has sent a constitutional amendment bill to the House of Representatives seeking legal backing for state police across Nigeria.

The bill, titled the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, was read in the House on Tuesday and referred to the Committee on Constitutional Review after passing first and second readings.

Tinubu said the proposal would create a constitutional path for state police services and add safeguards for a policing system involving both federal and state authorities.

The House also withdrew its own state police proposal and shifted attention to the Executive-backed bill. Punch and Daily Post reported that the withdrawal came during Tuesday’s plenary as lawmakers moved the President’s version forward.

Daily Trust reported that Tinubu described the bill as part of his administration’s plan to reorganise Nigeria’s security system. Channels TV said the President asked the House to consider the proposal quickly because of the country’s security challenges.

The bill now goes to committee review before any further vote. Even if it passes the House, state police would still need to clear the wider constitutional amendment process before becoming part of Nigeria’s policing structure.
