Okpebholo Pledges ₦1m Each To 41 Edo Returnees From South Africa

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has promised ₦1 million each to 41 Edo indigenes who returned from South Africa after xenophobic attacks.

The governor announced the ₦41 million support package on Monday while receiving the returnees at the Festival Hall of Government House in Benin City.

Channels TV reported that Okpebholo said the money was meant to help the returnees secure accommodation and begin rebuilding their lives. He also promised soft loans for those who want to start businesses.

Punch reported that the governor said each returnee would receive the money within 24 hours. The report said the returnees had lost property during attacks in South Africa and were being supported to settle back into society.

The pledge is a state-level response to the continuing return of Nigerians from South Africa after attacks on foreign nationals.
