Obafemi Awolowo University has declined a venue request for a lecture by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, with the Ile-Ife institution citing short notice and security concerns. The decision has ignited a broader debate about access, academic freedom, and political pressure on Nigerian universities.

OAU’s Public Relations Officer Abiodun Olarewaju stated that the university authorities were not informed about the event until the Friday before the Saturday programme. “The university authorities were not duly informed about the invitation or the status of the guest until Friday, just a day before the scheduled programme,” the statement read. Management denied any intent to embarrass Obi.

Obi was not satisfied. He responded by alleging the OAU incident was part of a “troubling pattern” of opposition political figures being denied access to Nigerian university campuses — stopping short of naming specific actors, but the implication was plain.

A Structural Vulnerability

Nigerian universities occupy a complicated space. Many depend on federal government funding, with leadership structures heavily influenced by whoever is in power. This creates a built-in vulnerability: institutions that should be open forums for political discourse can quietly become unwelcoming to certain voices.

Whether that is what happened at OAU remains contested. But Obi’s allegation has gained traction among Labour Party supporters and civil society observers who say the pattern has grown more visible heading into 2027.
