NSCDC Detains 24 Personnel Over Niger Miners’ Deaths

The NSCDC has detained 24 of its personnel after 37 suspected illegal miners died in the corps’ custody in Niger State.

Daily Trust reported that corps spokesman Babawale Afolabi said the personnel were found culpable after a joint operation. The detained officers include the suspended Niger State commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and 23 others paraded at the corps headquarters in Abuja.
The report said three more personnel had been placed on suspension, raising the number in detention to 24 after 21 were earlier suspended. The 37 miners were arrested on September 15 and 16 over alleged illegal mining before they died in custody.
The deaths have drawn federal scrutiny and public criticism. The latest detentions shift the matter from administrative suspension to a wider accountability process inside the corps.
