NSCDC deploys new commandant to Niger after miners custody deaths

The NSCDC has deployed Abdullahi Salisu Kabara as the new commandant in Niger State after the deaths of miners held by the corps.

Daily Trust reported that the command’s spokesperson, DSC Abubakar Rabiu Muti, said Kabara had taken over at a sensitive time for the Niger Command. The statement linked the change to the deaths of people arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the state.

Kabara expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and others affected by the incident. He said the corps must continue its enforcement work against illegal mining while respecting the dignity, safety and welfare of people in custody.

The deployment is the latest step in a case that has drawn federal scrutiny, suspensions and an investigation panel. The deaths have also raised wider questions about how security agencies handle suspects held during illegal-mining operations.
