Boko Haram attack kills vigilante commander, four others in Borno

A vigilante commander and four civilians have been killed after suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters attacked Wumbi community in Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack was reported in an agrarian community near the Cameroon border, where some residents had returned to farm under the protection of local vigilantes and Civilian Joint Task Force members after earlier displacement.

Police in Borno confirmed that a vigilante leader and four others were killed. Daily Post reported that the attack happened on Monday, September 21, but details emerged late because telecommunications service in the area is poor.

Daily Trust reported that the attackers came in large numbers and targeted the vigilante commander. After he was killed, residents and security volunteers who moved to recover his body were hit by an explosive device, killing four more people and injuring others.

The incident adds to the pressure on farming communities in border areas of Borno, where insurgent attacks have repeatedly disrupted movement, cultivation and local security arrangements.
