The New Nigerian Peoples Party has given INEC seven days to comply with a court order recognising the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee or face contempt proceedings.

National Secretary Ogini Olaposi signed the statement accusing the electoral commission of endangering Nigeria’s democracy by ignoring a High Court judgment delivered three weeks ago.

The FCT High Court had directed INEC to update its records within 72 hours and recognise the Major-led NWC, but the commission has yet to comply.

What the NNPP Is Saying

“INEC’s disobedience to court orders is avoidable,” Olaposi said. “It is disturbing that INEC — an institution led by a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria — should refuse to obey court orders.”

The party warned that INEC’s refusal could force adjustments to the 2027 election timetable if parties decide to sue. Proof of service of the court order is on record, leaving no room for claims of ignorance.

Bigger Picture

The NNPP called on the Attorney-General, the Chief Justice of the Federation, and the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate INEC’s conduct. It also demanded an overhaul of the commission’s legal department.

This is the latest in a string of confrontations between political parties and INEC over leadership recognition — a critical issue as parties prepare for candidate submissions ahead of 2027.

INEC has not responded to the contempt threat.
