Police in Katsina have warned politicians and their supporters that sponsorship of political violence, including online incitement, will attract arrest and prosecution as early activity for the 2027 elections gathers pace.

The command said it was watching both street-level mobilisation and what it called digital thuggery, a reference to online abuse, threats and incitement linked to political groups.

Katsina police commissioner Bello Shehu gave the warning during a meeting with senior officers and divisional police officers. The command said anyone who recruits or funds youths for violence would be treated as a security threat, no matter their political status.

The warning comes as parties and support groups begin positioning ahead of the next general election. Police said the goal was to prevent early campaign activity from sliding into intimidation, attacks or disorder in the state.

The command also urged parents, religious leaders and community leaders to discourage young people from being used for political violence.
