Fresh Push for Goodluck Jonathan’s 2027 Presidential Bid as Campaign Group Formally Calls on Former President
A group calling itself the Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group has formally called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing the need for experienced and stabilising leadership at what it described as a critical moment in the nation’s history.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the group’s Director General, Jeff Okoi, declared the gathering a “historic” moment aimed at outlining a collective position on Nigeria’s future leadership.
The case for Jonathan
Okoi described the group as a coalition of patriots committed to Nigeria’s unity, progress, and prosperity. He stressed that the call for Jonathan’s return was not driven by sentiment but by a conviction rooted in leadership experience.
“Our nation stands at a critical juncture, confronted by serious challenges that demand experienced leadership, national unity, economic revitalisation, and restored global confidence,” Okoi said.
“It is against this compelling backdrop that we gather to make a solemn and patriotic declaration — a declaration not only of hope, but of urgency to rescue Nigeria from the grip of uncertainty, division, stagnation, and to restore her to the path of stability, progress, and shared prosperity.”
The group said its decision followed consultations across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones and engagement with key stakeholders. If that claim is true, this isn’t a solo publicity stunt — it’s a coordinated effort with behind-the-scenes buy-in.
Okoi also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy. “The growing concerns about the narrowing of democratic space and the concentration of political power must not be ignored. Democracy thrives on inclusiveness, healthy competition, and fairness — not suppression.”
Why Jonathan?
The argument is straightforward: Jonathan is the only former president who voluntarily conceded defeat in a Nigerian election. His phone call to Muhammadu Buhari conceding before the results were fully tallied in 2015 earned him a global reputation as a democrat and a stabiliser.
Okoi described Jonathan as “a statesman of uncommon humility, a symbol of democratic stability, and a respected global ambassador of peace,” pointing to his record on electoral reform, agricultural transformation, and the relative economic stability of his tenure.
His critics point to the corruption scandals that plagued his administration, the Chibok girls kidnapping, and the Boko Haram escalation on his watch. Jonathan carries the weight of both the democratic concession he’s celebrated for and the governance failures he’s criticised for. Neither is going away.
Does he even want to run?
That’s the question nobody can answer yet. Jonathan has repeatedly denied interest in returning to office, and his silence since this campaign group’s declaration is telling. In Nigerian politics, proxy campaigns often test the waters for candidates who aren’t ready to declare. This could be one of those — or it could be genuine grassroots pressure that convinces him to reconsider.
Jonathan running would scramble the opposition landscape. He’s from the South-South, which doesn’t fit the North-South power rotation convention that the APC and PDP have informally observed. But he has cross-regional name recognition, incumbency experience, and a narrative of “the man who gave up power voluntarily” that resonates in a country increasingly worried about leaders who won’t let go.
Either way, the 2027 field is getting crowded, and Jonathan’s shadow now looms over it.
