Atiku Alleges Private Bank Account Breach After Suspicious Credit

Atiku Abubakar has asked security agencies to look into a suspicious credit paid into one of his private bank accounts, saying the transaction raised questions about how his banking details became available to an unknown person.

The former vice president said the payment carried the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign” and was not solicited, authorised or known to him or his campaign team.

A statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the account was a private one whose details were not in the public domain. It said the incident could point to a breach of confidential banking information if the details were obtained through people with privileged access.

The statement also warned that such exposure could put citizens at risk from criminals if private financial information can be accessed and used without consent.

Atiku, who is listed in the reports as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, said Nigerians should not be distracted by political tactics ahead of next year’s general elections.

Punch, Vanguard, Daily Trust and Daily Post all reported the same account-credit incident on Friday. The reports said the payment came from an unknown individual and that Atiku had put the public and security agencies on notice.
