Tinubu Sacks Edun, Dangiwa in Cabinet Reshuffle; Oyedele Takes Finance
President Bola Tinubu has quietly reshuffled his cabinet, removing two key economic managers in a move that signals growing frustration with the pace of fiscal reforms.
Wale Edun, who served as both Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has been relieved of his position. Ahmed Dangiwa, the Housing and Urban Development Minister, also exits the Federal Executive Council.
Taiwo Oyedele, previously Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, steps up as the substantive Finance Minister. Kabir Ibrahim Darma takes over as Housing Minister.
The changes came through a memo signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume on Tuesday. Handover deadlines are set for Thursday, April 23.
What This Means for Nigeria’s Economy
Edun’s removal isn’t entirely surprising. The former investment banker faced mounting criticism over persistent fiscal challenges, including revenue shortfalls and the slow implementation of tax reforms that were supposed to broaden Nigeria’s revenue base.
Oyedele brings a different profile to the role. A tax policy specialist with deep technical expertise, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform last year. His committee recommended consolidating Nigeria’s myriad taxes and levies—a move that could simplify compliance and boost collection if implemented.
The timing matters. Nigeria is still navigating elevated debt service costs and working to meet IMF benchmarks for fiscal consolidation. A fresh face at the finance ministry could signal Tinubu’s intent to accelerate reforms that have stalled under Edun’s watch.
Housing Ministry Gets New Direction
Dangiwa’s exit from the Housing Ministry comes as the sector faces its own challenges. Housing deficits remain acute, with millions of Nigerians lacking adequate shelter. The ministry had launched several initiatives, but delivery has been slow.
Darma, the incoming minister, is less publicly known but brings bureaucratic experience to the role. Whether he can move the needle on housing delivery remains to be seen.
The Bigger Picture
Tinubu has shown he’s willing to make personnel changes when results don’t match expectations. This reshuffle is relatively minor—only two ministers affected—but it sends a message about accountability at the highest levels.
The real test will be whether Oyedele can deliver on the tax reform agenda that Edun championed but struggled to execute. Nigerians watching their cost of living will be judging on outcomes, not announcements.
