SERAP Tells 2027 Presidential Candidates To Publish Assets

SERAP has asked the 19 presidential candidates announced by INEC to publish their assets and liabilities before the 2027 election.

The group also wants the candidates to disclose the assets of their spouses and, where applicable, unmarried children under 18. It said candidates should also state the legitimate sources of their major assets and publicly reject vote-buying before and during the election.

The call was contained in an open letter dated August 8, 2026, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare. The group said candidates seeking Nigeria’s highest office should show that their personal finances can withstand public scrutiny before asking voters for trust.

The candidates named in the reports include President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Peter Obi of the NDC, Senator Sandy Onor of the PDP, Omoyele Sowore of the AAC and Donald Duke of the PRP.

Other listed candidates include Okwori Ada Elizabeth Frederick of the NDP, Chukwu Anita Zugwai of the YPP, Rufai Adekunle Omoaje of the AA, Adenuga Sunday of the Boot Party, Memeh Samuel of the DLA, Nwanyanwu Daniel Danerechukwu of the ZLP and Okereke Sunday Chibuzor of the Labour Party.

SERAP said asset disclosure would help voters assess possible conflicts of interest and reduce the risk that public office is treated as private property. It also urged parties, campaign organisations and supporters not to offer money, gifts or other inducements in exchange for votes.

The group said it would consider legal action if the candidates failed to make the disclosures within seven days of receiving the letter.
