Senegal Sack Pape Thiaw, Coaching Crew After World Cup Exit

Senegal have sacked head coach Pape Thiaw and his coaching crew after the Teranga Lions crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 32.

The Senegalese Football Federation said its executive committee decided to begin the process of relieving Thiaw and his staff of their duties after reviewing the team’s performance.

Daily Trust reported that Senegal had reached the knockout stage after finishing as one of the best third-placed sides in a group with France, Norway and Iraq, but then lost 3-2 to Belgium after extra time despite leading late in normal time.

Channels TV also reported the dismissal, citing the federation’s statement and noting that FSF president Abdoulaye Fall was expected to speak on Monday about the decision and the team’s future.

Thiaw, a former Senegal international, became national team coach in 2024. His exit comes months after Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and a World Cup run that ended earlier than expected.
