Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers to reopen public schools closed in protest over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

Vanguard and Premium Times reported that the appeal was announced after a State Executive Council meeting, with Information Commissioner Dotun Oyelade saying the government was working to secure the release of the abducted victims.

The union shut public schools after gunmen abducted pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire. NaijaTrend previously reported Oyo’s security response around the affected communities here.

Premium Times reported that the abduction affected Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A Primary School in Esiele, all in Oriire Local Government Area.

The State Executive Council also approved N8.7 billion for teaching and learning materials for public primary and junior secondary schools.

Vanguard reported the exact first tranche as N8,768,954,000, while Premium Times described it as part of a broader N23 billion education intervention project.

The materials are expected to cover literacy, numeracy, mathematics, English language and basic science under a UBEC and World Bank-supported programme, according to the reports.

The council also approved a supplementary budget that raised the state’s 2026 appropriation from about N892.1 billion to N1.1 trillion, Premium Times reported.
