Esther Nworgu has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a dominant performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.

Nworgu lifted 123kg and scored 119 points to finish ahead of the field. Her win gave Team Nigeria its first gold of the Games and added another major result to the country’s strong record in para powerlifting.

It was also a one-two finish for Nigeria. Esther Oyema won silver with a best lift of 125kg and 115.5 points, while England’s Olivia Broome took bronze with 119kg and 106.6 points.

Premium Times and Channels TV reported that Nworgu set two Commonwealth Games records on her way to gold. Daily Post also described the victory as Nigeria’s first gold of the Games, while Vanguard reported the broader medal sweep in para powerlifting.

The result came after Roland Ezuruike had already won silver in the men’s Lightweight Group A event, giving Nigeria an early medal run in Glasgow.
