Nwachukwu breaks world record to win Commonwealth Games discus gold
Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu has won Commonwealth Games discus gold in Glasgow after throwing 39.66 metres, a mark reported as a new world record in her class.
Daily Post reported that Nwachukwu saved her best throw for the final round in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus event, beating her previous F42 world record by more than three metres.
Premium Times also reported the world-record gold and said Nwachukwu credited better preparation and support for Team Nigeria before the Games.
Welsh athlete Funmi Oduwaiye won silver with 38.52 metres, while Bree Cronin took bronze with a season-best 36.00 metres. Team Nigeria’s Jessica Oji also won silver in the women’s shot put with 17.87 metres.
The result gave Nigeria its seventh gold medal of the Games. Daily Post listed Team Nigeria at fifth on the medal table with seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals at the time of its report.
