Nigerian Medical Student Dies After Russian Airstrike In Ukraine

A 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after injuries she sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

She was a final-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University and was due to graduate before the attack that left her critically wounded.

The strike happened on June 29 in the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. Punch reported that Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot when they were hit.

Vanguard reported that she was first treated in Kharkiv before being moved to Germany, where she died on Sunday, July 5.

Kharkiv National Medical University described her as a bright and kind-hearted student who wanted to help others. The school said medical teams in Ukraine and Germany tried to save her, but her injuries were too severe.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office also sent condolences to her family and said the attack formed part of the continuing strikes on the city.

Her death has drawn attention to Nigerians still studying and working in Ukraine as the war continues to disrupt civilian life across the country.
