Nigeria Finishes Seventh At Commonwealth Games With 24 Medals

Nigeria ended the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in seventh place with 24 medals, finishing as the highest-ranked African country at the competition.

The final haul was 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals across athletics, weightlifting, para-sports and judo. South Africa and Kenya finished below Nigeria on the overall table, while Australia, England and Canada led the Games.

The result closed a strong but mixed campaign for Team Nigeria. Premium Times and Vanguard both reported that the final total fell short of Nigeria’s Birmingham 2022 return of 35 medals and also missed the National Sports Commission’s pre-Games projection of a bigger gold-medal push.

Athletics supplied several of the standout moments. Samuel Ogazi won the men’s 400m in 44.25 seconds, Ezekiel Nathaniel took gold in the men’s 400m hurdles in 48.47 seconds, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won the men’s shot put. Nigeria also added relay medals and individual podium finishes through athletes including Ruth Usoro and Ella Onojuvwevwo.

Outside the track, Enku Ekuta’s judo bronze ended a long wait for Nigeria in the sport at the Games. The team also picked up medals in para events and weightlifting, giving Nigeria enough points to stay inside the overall top 10 by the final table.

Daily Trust reported that the 24-medal total included a shortfall against the NSC’s target, but the final position still left Nigeria ahead of the rest of Africa at Glasgow.
