Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi Wins Prefontaine 100m, Equals National Record

Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi has claimed a major 100m win at the 2026 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, beating reigning world champion Oblique Seville and equalling the national record.
Ajayi ran 9.84 seconds at Hayward Field on Saturday in a non-Diamond League race. Seville finished second in 9.89 seconds, while Christian Coleman placed third in 9.95 seconds ahead of Kenneth Bednarek, who clocked 9.96 seconds.
The time matched Ajayi’s Nigerian record and stood as the second-fastest mark of the season behind Seville’s 9.82. Premium Times reported that he produced the run against a field containing Olympic and World Championship medallists.
Channels TV reported that Seville started strongly, but Ajayi moved past the Jamaican before the halfway point and held the lead to the line.
The victory continues a strong season for the 21-year-old, who also won the men’s 100m title at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
