Grid Fragility: Storm Topples Transmission Tower, TCN Declares Force Majeure

Nigeria’s power grid has once again shown its fragile nature after a severe rainstorm collapsed a critical transmission tower in Lagos, forcing the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to declare force majeure on the Ikeja West–Osogbo 330kV line.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 16, when the line tripped due to a fault located approximately 14.9 kilometres from the Ikeja West (Ayobo) end. A subsequent inspection revealed that Tower 515 had buckled at its midsection under the storm’s impact, cutting off a vital artery of electricity flow in the southwest.

While TCN is quick to clarify that this wasn’t a total national grid collapse, the declaration of force majeure is a blunt admission that the situation was beyond their control. It effectively means the company cannot guarantee normal operations on that line until the damaged structure is cleared and rebuilt.

Engineers are currently on-site dismantling the wreckage to make way for a new tower. TCN insists that bulk power supply in the corridor hasn’t been totally severed because alternative lines are still in service, though such redundancy is exactly what the grid lacks when these “localized” failures happen.

This latest failure comes at a time when the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is breathing down TCN’s neck to reduce transmission losses to 6.5 per cent by the end of 2026. It is hard to imagine hitting such targets when a single rainstorm can knock out a high-voltage tower and leave the system vulnerable.
