The Federal Government says Adire fabric will replace the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps as part of reforms approved for the 53-year-old scheme.

NaijaTrend earlier reported the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the wider NYSC reform package here.

Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande confirmed the uniform change on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, saying the policy is meant to promote local production and keep government spending within the Nigerian economy.

Vanguard, Daily Post, Punch and Channels TV all reported the minister as saying Adire is already produced in states including Ogun and Kwara, and that the government wants to support Nigerian textile industries.

Olawande also said the reforms would increasingly link corps members’ postings to their fields of study and professional backgrounds. He said graduates trained in education, for example, should be posted to schools after relevant orientation-camp preparation.

The minister said security concerns would also influence deployment, with the government considering more practical postings for corps members familiar with areas affected by insecurity.
