Defence minister proposes military training for Nigerians
Defence Minister Christopher Musa has proposed military training for Nigerian citizens, saying the experience would help people understand the discipline, sacrifice and strain behind military service.
The proposal was made during an African Leadership Podcast interview with Ken Giami. It has not been announced as an approved government policy; both outlets described it as Musa’s proposal.
Musa said training would expose citizens to hunger, exhaustion, long walks and other pressures that soldiers face while protecting the country.
“Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. I can tell you for free, it will give you a different perspective about life,” he said, according to Daily Post.
He argued that such training would also help citizens appreciate the work of the Armed Forces. Musa said it was painful when people insult the military or suggest soldiers do not want insecurity to end.
Punch also reported Musa’s comments on the cost of military service for personnel and their families. He said he spent much of the early years of his marriage away from home because of duty, describing it as one of the sacrifices made by service members.
The minister said Nigeria’s security challenges require both military action and non-military measures, including food, roads, hospitals, schools and wider public confidence in the country.
