Opposition Parties Open Talks On Single-Term 2027 Charter
Six opposition parties have agreed to begin talks on a cooperation framework for the 2027 general elections, including a proposal for a single-term transition charter and a process for choosing a common presidential candidate.
The agreement came at the G100 First Summit of Party Leaders and Stakeholders held in Abuja on Monday.
The parties listed in the summit communique are the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.
The communique said the parties would set up five working groups to prepare documents within four weeks. The documents include a roadmap to a common presidential candidate, a national covenant for democratic renewal, a single-term transition charter, a national reform programme and a framework for opposition unity.
Vanguard reported that Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were absent from the summit. Daily Trust listed participants including PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle, SDP National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam, NDC National Chairman Cleopas Moses and former Cross River State governor Donald Duke.
G100 representative Salihu Lukman proposed what he called a Government of National Competence built around a single four-year transition term. The plan is still at the negotiation stage and does not yet amount to a joint opposition ticket.
