Kwara Senator Saliu Mustapha Resigns From APC
Senator Saliu Mustapha has resigned from the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, opening a new crack in the ruling party in one of its North-Central strongholds.
Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central in the Senate, announced the decision in a resignation letter dated August 14 and addressed to the APC chairman of Gambari Ward 1 in Ilorin East Local Government Area.
He said he left after weeks of consultations with supporters, constituents and political stakeholders across Kwara State. The senator said recent developments in the state chapter of the party no longer matched the political principles and expectations of the people he represents.
Punch reported that Mustapha posted the letter on his verified Facebook page late Thursday. Premium Times reported that he also accused the Kwara APC leadership of moving away from collective unity and internal democracy.
Mustapha was elected to the Senate on the APC platform. His resignation is expected to draw attention to the next steps of his political camp and the effect on party alignments in Kwara Central ahead of future elections.
