Tinubu, Obi, Sowore Sign 2027 Peace Accord In Abuja

Presidential candidates and party leaders have signed the first National Peace Accord ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja. President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who signed for him alongside the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.

Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore and Donald Duke were among the candidates reported at the venue. The reports said the event was organised by the National Peace Committee and attended by political party representatives, election officials, security agencies and diplomats.

The accord is meant to commit parties and candidates to peaceful campaigning before the 2027 elections. The reports said it was framed around issue-based campaigns and against intimidation, inflammatory rhetoric and violence.

Tinubu, in remarks carried by the reports, warned political actors against using artificial intelligence and other forms of misinformation to deepen tension during the campaign period.

The signing gives the 2027 race an early formal peace pledge, but its real test will come once campaigns intensify and parties begin direct attacks on one another.
