Jingir’s Infidels Remark Draws Fresh Condemnation Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket

A remark by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Jingir about Christians and the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket has drawn fresh criticism from political and religious voices.

Punch reported that Jingir’s comment, in which he described Christians as “infidels” while backing a Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of 2027, drew condemnation from figures including Rabiu Kwankwaso, Northern CAN chairman Joseph Hayab and human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju.

Daily Post reported that political strategist Baba Yusuf questioned how President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Remi Tinubu, and son, Seyi Tinubu, both described in the report as Christians, would feel about the remarks.

Daily Trust reported that Kaduna-based cleric Ahmad Gumi urged religious leaders to keep religion out of partisan politics. Gumi said religious sentiment should not be dragged into political contests in Nigeria.

The controversy comes as parties and political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. The reports framed the backlash as part of a wider argument over religion, representation and campaign language in national politics.
