Voter Surge: INEC Records 4.1 Million New Registrations for 2027
The road to 2027 is getting crowded. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 4,121,835 eligible Nigerians have completed their registration in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The numbers are telling. A massive 68.8 per cent of these new voters are youths between the ages of 18 and 34. This isn’t just a routine update of the register; it is a clear signal that the younger generation is determined to have a say in the next election, likely fueled by the political awakening of the last few cycles.
The breakdown shows a slight tilt toward female registrants, who make up 55.3 per cent of the new additions. This suggests a growing awareness and mobilization of women in the political process.
However, INEC has cautioned that these are “preliminary figures.” The data still needs to go through a cleaning process, including claims, objections, and the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to weed out duplicates and ghosts.
For the political parties, this surge is a warning. The youth vote is no longer a peripheral factor; it is becoming the core of the electoral map. Anyone ignoring this demographic in their 2027 strategy is playing a dangerous game.
