Alaafin of Oyo Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity in South-West, Kwara, Kogi

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has raised the alarm over rising insecurity across the South-West, Kwara, and parts of Kogi, demanding urgent action from federal and state authorities.

A statement issued on Friday by the Palace Director of Culture and Public Relations, Ademola Adeniyi-Kukulaja, described the frequency and severity of attacks in the region as a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and community stability.

‘This needs immediate action’

“Kabiyesi views these developments with utmost urgency and deep concern,” the statement read. “The frequency and nature of these incidents pose a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and the overall stability of affected communities.”

Rural and agrarian settlements have become increasingly vulnerable, the Alaafin noted, calling for rapid deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained operations to deter further attacks.

Aare Ona Kakanfo mobilised

In a notable move, the Alaafin directed the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, to begin wide-ranging consultations with traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders across vulnerable areas for local and traditional security interventions.

The monarch stressed that any such initiatives must operate within the Constitution and align with lawful security operations.

Communities told to stay vigilant

Oba Owoade urged authorities to maintain transparent communication with affected communities, warning that misinformation and silence could fuel panic. He also called on citizens to remain vigilant and cooperative with security agencies.

“Properly guided community vigilance and organisation can significantly enhance early detection of threats and improve collective resilience,” the statement added.

The Alaafin commiserated with families of victims affected by recent violence across the region. Several states in Nigeria continue to battle insecurity — banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks — despite repeated government assurances.
