Senate Confirms Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina As Non-Career Ambassador

The Senate has confirmed former Federal University Oye-Ekiti Vice-Chancellor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador, despite objections from some lawmakers and civil society groups.

The confirmation came after the Senate considered the report of its Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello. Senator Simon Lalong presented the report and urged lawmakers to approve the nomination.

The decision follows earlier protests over Fasina’s nomination, which NaijaTrend reported here. The groups had asked the Senate to halt the process because of allegations linked to his time at FUOYE.

Channels TV reported that some lawmakers, including Senator Adams Oshiomhole, raised objections during the debate. Other senators backed the committee’s recommendation, arguing that the Senate should rely on findings by relevant authorities. The committee said the allegations had been investigated by the university’s governing council and the police, and that the claims were found to be unsubstantiated.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also supported relying on the committee’s report before the chamber confirmed Fasina.
