The Presidency has rejected Peter Obi’s claim that he is being targeted by President Bola Tinubu’s government, escalating the exchange that followed Obi’s warning about his personal safety before the 2027 election.

Obi had earlier said he might not be alive to contest in 2027, linking the comment to what he described as pressure on opposition figures and frustration of his personal activities. NaijaTrend reported that earlier claim here.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Tinubu, responded in a post on X on Wednesday night, describing Obi’s claim as unfounded and misleading.

Premium Times reported Onanuga as saying Obi’s statement that he may not be alive for the January 2027 election, and that people were being pressured not to invite him to social events, amounted to a fabricated narrative.

The presidential aide accused Obi of dragging the government into personal inconveniences and using what he called exaggeration and baseless allegations.

Onanuga also referred to Obi’s account of an airport incident in which officials allegedly locked his car, arguing that it may have resulted from a parking violation rather than political targeting.

He further claimed that Fidelity Bank, in which he said Obi has a substantial interest, was benefiting from the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms and was not being targeted by the government.

The exchange keeps Obi’s safety comments in the centre of the 2027 political debate. It also adds a direct Presidency response to a claim that had already drawn attention because of the former Anambra governor’s profile and the early tension around the next presidential race.
