Peter Obi Asks Tinubu To Resign Or Drop 2027 Bid Over Insecurity

Peter Obi has asked President Bola Tinubu to resign or drop any plan to seek re-election in 2027, saying the Federal Government has failed to show enough urgency over insecurity.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate made the call after visiting Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over the continued captivity of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in the state.

Obi said the Oyo abduction had dragged on for more than 50 days and argued that the delay in rescuing the victims showed a failure of leadership. Vanguard reported that he referred to 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers abducted from a school in Oyo State on May 15, 2026.

He also criticised Tinubu for allegedly failing to contact Makinde over the abduction, contrasting that with the way previous presidents responded to major security incidents involving states.

Obi linked the Oyo case to wider insecurity across the country, saying many Nigerians now feel abandoned by leaders who should be protecting them.

The comments add to the political pressure around Tinubu’s security record as opposition figures begin to frame insecurity as a central 2027 issue.
