Tinubu Playfully Calls First Lady “Iya Alakara” After Akara Controversy

President Bola Tinubu has jokingly referred to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu as “Iya Alakara” during the Presidential Press Corps Dinner at the State House in Abuja.

The remark was a light-hearted reference to the debate that followed the First Lady’s recent advice that women could consider small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli.

Vanguard and Punch reported that a video shared by Aso Rock TV showed the President smiling as he acknowledged guests before introducing his wife with the nickname.

Punch quoted the President as saying, “my dear wife, the First Lady, Iya Alakara,” a line that drew laughter from the audience.

The First Lady had earlier clarified that the empowerment initiative was not limited to akara sellers and was aimed at a broad range of petty traders.
