Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially picked up the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship nomination form for the 2027 Kebbi State election — a move that signals a serious challenge to the APC’s long hold on the state.

Malami Picks Up Form in Marafa Ward

Malami announced his decision in a statement on Saturday, saying he could no longer stay silent while Kebbi “sinks deeper into insecurity, poverty, educational collapse, and economic hardship.” He obtained his ADC membership card in Marafa Ward, Birnin Kebbi, and declared what he called a “state of emergency on misgovernance.”

The former minister cited disturbing statistics to back his claims. According to him, more than 67 percent of children aged six to fifteen are out of school in Kebbi, while over 88 percent of children in the state live in multidimensional poverty. He also said hundreds of severely malnourished children died within nine months in 2025 alone.

Poverty, Insecurity, Healthcare — A State “Under Siege”

“Communities are under constant attacks from bandits, innocent citizens are being kidnapped for ransom, farmers are abandoning their lands, and businesses are collapsing under fear and uncertainty,” Malami said in the statement, according to Channels Television.

He described the healthcare situation as grim, with maternal mortality still among the highest in Nigeria and many rural women lacking access to basic antenatal care. Malaria, he added, continues to ravage children under five across the state.

Malami accused the current Kebbi State government of misplaced priorities at a time when citizens are struggling. “This is not the Kebbi we deserve. This is not the future our children deserve,” he said.

What He’s Promising

The ADC aspirant pledged to restore security, rebuild public schools, strengthen healthcare, revive agriculture, and create jobs for youth if elected in 2027. “My mission is clear,” he said. “The era of empty propaganda and ineffective leadership must come to an end.”

Malami served as AGF under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023. His entry into the Kebbi governorship race on an opposition platform marks a notable shift and is expected to shake up the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls. The APC currently controls the state under Governor Nasir Idris.
