Peter Obi Leads South-East Leaders in Closed-Door Talks With Jonathan Ahead of 2027
Peter Obi led a high-powered delegation of South-East and Igbo leaders to the residence of former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, April 27, 2026, for closed-door consultations that carry obvious implications for the 2027 general elections.
Obi posted about the meeting on X afterward, offering a glimpse into the tone of discussions. “Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance,” he wrote.
He also framed the meeting as part of a broader necessity. “At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” he said.
Beyond Jonathan — Ijaw Elders Too
Reports indicate the delegation’s outreach did not end at Jonathan’s door. The group also met Ijaw elders — a deliberate move into a region where Jonathan commands deep loyalty and where Obi has historically had thinner support. Cross-ethnic bridge-building, in other words, done in a place where it counts.
The visit fits into a broader pattern. Obi has been methodically working to assemble a national coalition — reaching across geopolitical lines that his 2023 campaign was often accused of not crossing convincingly enough. His presence at the Ibadan opposition summit was part of the same effort.
Jonathan, while not publicly aligned with any 2027 movement, remains one of the most influential political voices in the South-South. His willingness to host the delegation and engage in what Obi described as “frank” discussions is itself a signal worth noting.
2027 is still more than a year away. Monday’s meeting suggests Obi has no intention of waiting for the campaign season to begin.
