The federal and Benue State governments are proposing to widen the Wurukum Flyover in Makurdi, but work on the revised design will begin only after approval.
The proposal follows Governor Hyacinth Alia’s request for a higher-capacity bridge at the busy Wurukum Roundabout. Federal Controller of Works in Benue, Mukaila Danladi, said the project had reached 69.87 per cent completion.
Danladi gave the update in a Friday interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi.
Under the proposed design, the carriageway would be widened to 10.3 metres on each side, with a one-metre median. Danladi said the additional road space was intended to improve traffic flow around the roundabout.
He acknowledged the disruption that construction had caused motorists and residents. Some earlier diversions had been removed to ease movement, but further changes to traffic routes could follow approval of the expansion.
The design review had slowed work on affected parts of the project, Danladi said. He expected construction to move faster as the rainy season subsided.
Construction of the flyover was launched on September 15, 2025, as part of the Makurdi-Ninth Mile road dualisation project. The flyover falls within the first section of that wider scheme.
On the wider Makurdi-Otukpo-Ninth Mile-Enugu road, Danladi said about 150 kilometres had reached the layer before asphalt surfacing, while final asphalt had been laid on about 87 kilometres. He urged road users to obey traffic instructions and cooperate with construction teams.
