Makurdi homes and businesses flooded after hours of rain
Floodwater submerged homes and businesses in parts of Makurdi, Benue State, after hours of heavy rain on Monday.
Affected areas listed in the reports included Achussa, New GRA, Idye, Wurukum, Wadata, North Bank, Naka Road, Ankpa Quarters and parts of the town close to ongoing construction sites and riverbanks.
Residents said household items and foodstuff were destroyed, while commuters were stranded as water covered several streets.
One resident, Frank Tion, blamed blocked drainage channels linked to road construction and called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to get contractors to reopen them. Another resident, Theresa Andyson, said large drainages already built by the government helped reduce the damage but did not stop the flooding.
Daily Trust described the rain as lasting more than nine hours. Vanguard reported an 18-hour downpour affecting homes and businesses in Makurdi.
