Wike Orders Demolition Of Houses On Abuja Waterways After Flooding

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the demolition of houses built on waterways in Abuja after flooding hit parts of the capital.

The directive followed inspections in affected areas, where the minister blamed blocked water channels and illegal construction for worsening the flood impact. He said buildings standing on waterways would be removed to prevent a repeat of the damage.

The reports said the flooding left residents counting losses after water entered homes and disrupted movement in parts of the city. The FCT Administration is expected to identify the affected structures before enforcement begins.

Wike also warned that approval papers would not save any building found to be obstructing a water channel. He said the city could not keep allowing private development to put wider communities at risk during heavy rains.

The order adds a tougher enforcement angle to Abuja’s flood-control debate, especially in districts where residents have complained about poor drainage, blocked channels and construction on natural waterways.
