Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma chaired the APC Progressive Governors Forum meeting in Abuja on Saturday, pressing ahead despite an active plot by a faction of party governors to remove him from the chairmanship position.

Reports indicate that about 20 governors had been in discussions to oust Uzodinma, but 18 governors ultimately backed his continued leadership, dismissing the replacement speculation and passing a vote of confidence in him, according to Punch. Uzodinma held the meeting regardless, making clear the standoff has not been resolved.

The Divide Inside APC’s Governors Forum

The PGF crisis is the latest sign of internal friction within the ruling APC as 2027 approaches. Sources cited by Vanguard described a split among the governors — with a faction pushing for new leadership in the forum and another firmly backing Uzodinma. The governor of Imo State has been a loyalist of President Bola Tinubu, and any removal effort is being read in political circles as a proxy battle over influence within the party structure ahead of the election cycle.

That 18 governors backed him suggests Uzodinma retains a working majority, but the fact that roughly 20 reportedly pushed for his exit shows his grip on the forum is not as firm as it once appeared.

Uzodinma Presses On

By chairing the meeting despite the public airing of the removal plot, Uzodinma was sending a signal — the same one embattled political figures often send when they want to project stability: nothing to see here, business as usual.

Whether that holds will depend on how the opposing bloc moves next. For now, the PGF has a chairman who is both contested and still in his seat — a situation that is likely to remain tense heading into the second half of the year.
