UK observes Ekiti governorship election

The British High Commission has congratulated Governor Abiodun Oyebanji on his re-election in Ekiti State but flagged vote trading, BVAS technical glitches and poor access for persons with disabilities as issues that marred the June 20 poll.

Vanguard reported that the UK observers described the election as a mostly orderly first test of the Electoral Act 2026, but said they witnessed instances of vote trading and interference by party agents, which they described as corrosive.

The observers also flagged technical glitches with the Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System that risked depressing turnout, and noted that most polling units were inaccessible to persons with disabilities.

The British High Commission urged INEC to address the identified issues before the Osun off-cycle governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
