Trump Letter To Tinubu Puts Nigeria Security Ties Back In Focus

A letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu has put security cooperation between Abuja and Washington back in the spotlight, with Trump praising Tinubu over efforts to confront terrorism and violence affecting Christian communities.

The letter, dated July 6, 2026 and released on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, thanked Tinubu for earlier correspondence and said both countries shared a goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms.

In the text released by the Presidency, Trump said he appreciated Tinubu’s leadership and was honoured to stand with Nigeria in the fight against terrorists. He also referred to the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as part of the framework for security work between both countries.

The Presidency said the relationship between both countries had grown in recent months, including cooperation through a joint working group led by the two countries’ national security advisers. Reports on the letter also referred to training, intelligence sharing and joint operations as part of the cooperation.

The letter comes amid continued concern over attacks on communities in parts of Nigeria and wider security pressure across West Africa. It also follows a recent visit to Abuja by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia, who met senior Nigerian officials and pledged stronger cooperation.
