Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have dislodged a terrorist enclave in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State and recovered weapons, ammunition and motorcycles, according to reports on the military operation.

The clearance operation was carried out by troops of the Nigerian Army’s COAS Special Intervention Battalion 7, Sector 2. The troops moved through identified threat areas including Manu, Alkasim and Kandam villages, as well as the Magarya Forest axis.

Punch reported that the operation followed intelligence on the movement of armed groups in the area. The troops made contact with the terrorists inside the Magarya Forest enclave, exchanged fire with them and forced the group to abandon its position.

After the encounter, the troops searched the area and recovered a PKT machine gun, AK-47 rifles and a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition. Several motorcycles and other logistical items believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing terrorists were also recovered.

The military said the recovery would reduce the group’s ability to operate in the area. The troops were also said to have maintained patrols and follow-up operations to prevent the armed group from regrouping around the cleared communities.

The operation comes amid continued military activity across the North-West, where armed groups have carried out attacks and kidnappings in rural communities.
