Tinubu Tells Media Not To Become Megaphones For Terrorists, Kidnappers

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian journalists to avoid reporting that turns the media into megaphones for terrorists and kidnappers while the country confronts security threats.

Channels TV reported that Tinubu spoke at the inaugural Presidential Press Corps Dinner at the State House in Abuja, where he was decorated as Grand Patron of the corps.

He said the media should choose facts over falsehood, substance over sensation and credibility over clickbait, while still recognising press freedom as central to democracy.

Tinubu also said freedom of expression was not freedom to defame and that the Cybercrimes Act was meant to protect citizens from malicious falsehoods and other digital abuses.

He said his administration had received both praise and criticism from the press, adding that scrutiny was welcome when it gave citizens context and helped them understand government policy.

The remarks were reported from a statement by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
