SERAP Asks INEC To Publish 2027 Political Donation Limits

SERAP has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to tell Nigerians whether it has fixed political donation limits for the 2027 elections and, if it has, to publish the limits for parties, candidates and donors.

The request was sent to INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan in a Freedom of Information letter dated August 22, 2026, and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare.

The organisation wants INEC to disclose whether it has used its power under section 91 of the Electoral Act, 2026, to prescribe limits on political contributions. It also asked the commission to explain the systems, personnel and procedures it has put in place to monitor campaign spending and enforce compliance during the 2027 election process.

SERAP said INEC should make clear how it will track cash donations, gifts in kind, digital and social media financing, spending by outside groups, and donations passed through intermediaries. The group argued that unclear political funding rules could make it harder for voters and civic groups to follow how parties and candidates are financed.

The request also asked INEC to publish reports on political party finances. SERAP said the commission’s role goes beyond receiving financial statements from parties, adding that the law requires it to examine party finances, investigate where necessary and report to the National Assembly.

SERAP gave INEC seven days to provide the information. It said it would consider legal action if the commission did not respond within that period.

The demand comes after INEC released the notice of election and timetable for the 2027 polls. SERAP said early disclosure of political finance rules would help candidates, parties, donors and voters understand the limits before campaign spending gathers pace.
