Reps Open Probe Into Xenophobic Attacks On Nigerians In South Africa

The House of Representatives has opened a probe into losses suffered by Nigerians in repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with lawmakers asking for a clearer record of deaths, destroyed businesses and displacement.
The resolution followed a motion by Babajimi Benson, who said Nigeria had not carried out a comprehensive assessment of what its citizens lost during years of anti-foreigner violence in South Africa.
Lawmakers said the audit should cover human and economic losses and help Nigeria pursue compensation and stronger protection for its citizens abroad.
The debate also touched on Nigeria’s role in the anti-apartheid struggle and the need for South Africa to do more to protect Nigerians and other African migrants.
Vanguard, Premium Times and Punch reported the same House resolution, including the planned review of casualties, property losses and possible compensation measures.
